Description

This cup has a rich, earthy elegance to it—very atmospheric 🍂

It’s a straight-sided tumbler form with a solid, grounded presence. The glaze work is the star here: layered, flowing tones of mossy green, smoky blue, iron-rich brown, and hints of rust create a surface that feels almost geological, like a weathered cliff face or oxidized metal. The way the colors break and pool suggests a reactive glaze, giving each angle something new to discover.

The interior shifts dramatically to a deep plum-purple, glossy and luminous, which contrasts beautifully with the rugged exterior. That inner color feels intimate and jewel-like—something you notice most when the cup is in use. The rim is clean and even, with a thin line where the interior glaze meets the exterior, adding a subtle sense of refinement.

Overall, this cup feels contemplative and tactile—perfect for someone who enjoys holding a warm drink slowly and appreciating the surface, weight, and depth of a thoughtfully glazed piece.

Artist Statement

My work is driven by an insistent need to make — to explore, experiment, and stay in conversation with materials. I work across multiple mediums, clay, glass, paint, fiber. I let the process guide the outcome rather than forcing a fixed result. What’s made is often taken apart, reshaped, or returned to the beginning.

I draw inspiration from the natural world and from the quiet details of everyday life — the mundane, the overlooked, the in-between. I’m interested in cycles: forming, breaking down, and becoming something new.

I approach my practice with openness and curiosity, allowing room for wonder, failure, and transformation. What comes before is carried forward. The work evolves through repetition, pressure, attention, and time.

At its core, my work is about staying present — paying attention, working honestly, and honoring change as part of the process. - Sueann Smith
