Description

This stained glass light bulb sun catcher is charming, clever, and beautifully restrained—an idea that feels playful without losing elegance.

The yellow glass is the star here. Its warm, honeyed tone catches light beautifully, glowing rather than merely reflecting. The subtle vertical striations add texture and motion, so as the light shifts throughout the day, the bulb seems to softly flicker—an especially fitting effect for the subject matter.

The metalwork is clean and thoughtful. The silvery solder lines clearly define the bulb’s outline, while the darker cap at the top provides contrast and visual grounding. The delicate pull-chain detail inside is a delightful touch—small enough to feel like a discovery rather than a gimmick, and it adds a layer of narrative to the piece.

The yellow really sings, reinforcing the sun-catcher’s purpose. This is the kind of piece that would instantly lift a space: perfect for a kitchen window, studio, or any spot where light and creativity meet. It’s joyful, well-crafted, and quietly imaginative—an everyday object transformed into something warm and poetic.

Artist Statement

My work is driven by an insistent need to make — to explore, experiment, and stay in conversation with materials. I work across multiple mediums, clay, glass, paint, fiber. I let the process guide the outcome rather than forcing a fixed result. What’s made is often taken apart, reshaped, or returned to the beginning.

I draw inspiration from the natural world and from the quiet details of everyday life — the mundane, the overlooked, the in-between. I’m interested in cycles: forming, breaking down, and becoming something new.

I approach my practice with openness and curiosity, allowing room for wonder, failure, and transformation. What comes before is carried forward. The work evolves through repetition, pressure, attention, and time.

At its core, my work is about staying present — paying attention, working honestly, and honoring change as part of the process. - Sueann Smith
